Ukrainian Gifts & Holiday Gift Guide: Handmade Beaded Jewelry by Price and Occasion

A short guide to giving beadwork, by price and by occasion. Every piece on this page is handmade in Ukraine from glass seed beads or sculpted polymer clay, arrives gift-ready, and ships free in the US on orders over $95.

Under $30 — the small charms

The food earrings are the safest gift we make: lime slices, lemons, sushi, tacos, donuts — tiny, exact and funny. For the night side: skull earrings, black cats, bats. For December: the Christmas beaded earrings. All earrings →

$30–75 — fringe, chokers and bracelets

Extra-long fringe earrings in a dozen colorways, the loomed beaded bracelets with poppies and sown-field diamonds, the snake that is a choker or a twice-wrapped bracelet, and the butterfly and Victorian-lace chokers. This is where most gifts land.

$75–150 — the long tales

A gerdan is the gift that says you understood what the person loves: a loomed Ukrainian necklace with a real pattern language, worn over a vyshyvanka or a plain black dress alike. Also here: the “Violets” bracelet-and-earrings set, the Peacock Eye set, and the hand-beaded neckties for the one man who has everything.

The showpieces

Large three-dimensional flower necklaces, sautoirs and the gerdans that take weeks — the exclusive collection. Each exists once; when one is gone, it is gone.

By occasion

Christmas and the holidays — the Christmas earrings and the Christmas ornaments necklace, or any gerdan in red and white. For the gothic one — the Dark Arts: skulls, bats, serpents and black lace. Vyshyvanka Day (the third Thursday of May) and Ukrainian Independence Day (24 August) — a gerdan or sylianka is the traditional companion to the embroidered shirt. Weddings — the white and silver pieces in necklaces and chokers. For someone far from home — anything with poppies, wheat or cornflowers; those are the motifs people recognise from their grandmother’s house.

The gift calendar — every occasion, the right piece

St. Nicholas Day (6 December) — in Ukraine the small gifts come on St. Nicholas, not Christmas: a pair of fruit earrings under the pillow, or the Christmas beaded earrings.

Christmas gifts (25 December) and Sviat Vechir — handmade Christmas jewelry that is not a snowman: the “Christmas ornaments” necklace, red-and-white gerdans, the matching sets for the one big box. Order early in December for US Christmas delivery; every piece arrives gift-ready. Read the beaded Christmas note on St. Nicholas and Sviat Vechir.

New Year’s Eve — the statement pieces: a black beaded fringe choker, the Peacock Eye set, or extra-long fringe earrings that move when you dance.

Valentine’s Day (14 February) — a Valentine’s gift for her that is not a heart-shaped box: the “Violets” bracelet and earrings, a rose, a poppy choker. For him: a hand-beaded necktie, which no one else will have thought of.

International Women’s Day (8 March) — the biggest gift day in the Ukrainian calendar. Flowers that do not wilt: the 3D flower necklaces in the exclusive collection, blossom earrings, anything with poppies.

Easter and pysanka season (April) — bright folk-pattern loomed bracelets and spring-colored earrings for the Easter table.

Mother’s Day (second Sunday of May) — a gerdan is the Mother’s Day gift with a story in it; the sunflower and wheat patterns are the ones mothers recognise.

Vyshyvanka Day (third Thursday of May) — the embroidered shirt wants its traditional companion: a gerdan, a sylianka, or a beaded choker in red, black and white.

Graduations and birthdays — the food earrings for the funny friend, a set for the milestone.

Ukrainian Independence Day (24 August) — blue and yellow, or the full folk palette: gerdans, blue-and-yellow loomed cuffs.

Halloween (31 October) — handmade Halloween earrings and jewelry that survive past November: beaded skeletons, bats, black cats, skulls — the whole Dark Arts collection. Read how a skeleton is beaded.

Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday — we do not do doorbusters; most pieces exist once. What we do: free US shipping over $95 all year, and gift-ready packaging on everything. Join the studio list at the bottom of the page for the one holiday note we send.

Anniversaries and “just because” — the rare pages: one-of-one showpieces that will never be made again.

More occasions — days, creatures, colors and communities

Beadwork has a way of fitting days nobody else makes a gift for.

Days of creatures and flowers

World Snake Day (16 July) and the Year of the Snake — the snake choker, the python rope, the snake bracelet. International Cat Day (8 August) and Black Cat Day (27 October) — black cat earrings, silhouettes. Bat Appreciation Day (17 April) — beaded bats, half a year from Halloween. Wolf Awareness Week (October) and every full moon — the wolf under the moon. Owl Awareness Day (4 August) — the owl gerdan. Butterfly Day (14 March) — the butterfly choker.

Remembrance Day / Poppy Day (11 November) — a beaded poppy worn for the week: poppy fringe earrings, poppy chokers and gerdans. Sunflower season — the sunflower necklace, Ukraine’s own flower. Day of the Dead (1–2 November) and Friday the 13th — skull earrings, worn as memento mori rather than fright. First day of spring — blossom and violets; first day of autumn — wheat, avocado and amber palettes. Pride month — the multicolor fringe and the Day and Night pair.

Birthdays by color

Gift the birthstone color without the stone: January garnet — red poppies; February amethyst — purple fringe; March aquamarine — blue chokers; April diamond — white and silver; May emerald — the green python; June pearl — white sylianky; July ruby — red gerdans; August peridot — green leaves and limes; September sapphire — blue geometry; October opal or tourmaline — the Day and Night pair; November topaz — amber, wheat and sunflowers; December turquoise — the blue-and-gold loomed pieces.

Life moments

Sweet sixteen, 18th, 21st — a first real piece: a small gerdan or choker. New job, promotion, first paycheck — a hand-beaded necktie. Teacher and nurse appreciation — apple earrings for the teacher, the food series for anyone who feeds people. Bridesmaids and bachelorette — matching sets, five identical fringe pairs, white and silver for the bride. Baby shower, for the mother — the “Nadiia” necklace (the name means hope). Naturalization, housewarming, a new country — a heritage gerdan for the day the papers come. Long-distance love and homecomings — poppies, the Ukrainian flower of memory and return.

Communities and costumes

Cosplay, Renaissance faires and cottagecore — the Victorian lace choker, the Peacock Eye set, the “Lorien” necklace for the elf in your life. Goth, witchy and dark-academia wardrobes — the Dark Arts. Folk-dance ensembles, Ukrainian schools and student unions — gerdans by the set, blue-and-yellow loomed cuffs; write to us for group orders. Ukrainian festivals and Independence Day parades — what to wear with the vyshyvanka: a gerdan or sylianka, a red-black-white choker. Heritage dates — Ukrainian Heritage Month, the Day of Ukrainian Statehood (15 July), and Holodomor Remembrance (fourth Saturday of November), worn in black and wheat. Small Business Saturday and Fair Trade Day — everything here is handmade in Ukraine by master artisans; that is the whole point.

Not sure? Write to us with a budget and a few words about the person, and we will suggest two or three pieces. Custom work is also possible — allow several weeks.
